NASA and Aerospace warming up to Blockchain Technology
Blockchain has seen a lot of success in the past few months. Every industry is trying to get their hands on the success of Blockchain and this time its the aerospace sector. NASA is looking into different ways Blockchain technology can be used in their system. A NASA computer engineer, Ronald J Reisman, sees the scope of Blockchain technology in the US ATC system.
According to him, the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is going live in 2020 but the system is not secure enough. The ADS-B does not protect any flight information such as its position and plans which opens up the system for potential attacks.
The solution for attacks was given by Ronald himself. He proposed that a Blockchain communication system will be a secure way of communicating with the air traffic system, operators and other authorities. He said that the system will allow a safe and secure communication between the aircraft and the authorities without attackers getting access.
Reisman said in his paper:
“(The system) Proposes to leverage an industrial-strength open-source enterprise-blockchain framework called Hyperledger Fabric to demonstrate potential solutions to vexing technical issues that threaten the adoption of ADS-B by Military, Corporate, and other aircraft operators who do not want their operations and movements discernable by the general public.”
Reisman thinks this system will be distributed in large scale and can be used to improve and secure the aviation communication systems. He also thinks Blockchain has more meaning to it rather than just finance and we couldn’t agree more. The blockchain technology is beyond just cryptocurrencies and many industries have started to realise this now.
Honeywell using Blockchain already
Honeywell, a conglomerate manufacturing company, is already using blockchain to sell their aircraft parts through a web portal owned by them. This web portal is blockchain based and has a highly secure system.
Lisa Butters, who works at Honeywell, says that online portals are a great market for airspace parts and Honeywell has the potential to set a new standard with their work.
Artem Orange, the CEO of Aeron, said:
“The aviation space is complex. So, there is little to no room for violations. Without the implementation of blockchain technology, the industry is already effective and safe. What this means is that it would be difficult to find use cases for blockchain technology in an already functional industry. Notwithstanding, the application of blockchain technology by Honeywell and Aeron is a good example of how it can be applied efficiently.”
Other sectors for Blockchain technology
Cryptocurrency was a hot topic when it was initially introduced in the market. However, with time the prices of crypto went down and so did the interest of people. This lead to Blockchain being used in different fields that looked more promising such as Blockchain in the technology sector, blockchain for startups, and a lot more new sectors.
Blockchain promises to show improvements in well-established sectors in the near future. The technology is still new needs a lot of research to get the best use out of it. Even though crypto is not as famous as it used to be, it is still being used in many sectors as a way of payment.
Blockchain has seen success in industries such as banking, healthcare, startups, etc. This has made large profits for the Blockchain development companies and blockchain developers. For the same reason, the blockchain development cost has also been affected in a positive way. Companies are going all the way to make sure they provide the best blockchain development services to their clients.
Recently we also saw that Thailand was the first ever country to use Blockchain technology in the voting system. There were other countries that followed the same after this news was out. Blockchain has a lot of potential and it’s just the beginning of an era, the future has more to offer.
For now, this is all about the blockchain and aerospace system coming together. We will be back with more updates on blockchain so stay tuned!
