Making Transportation Industry Responsible and Micro
We are living in a world where more than 95% of people globally are breathing in polluted air. It has become an end goal of every sector to get more conscious about the environment. With 75% of pollution happening in the USA traced back transportation, it was time to mobilize the domain and nudging it towards micro-mobility.
Moo is an application that mobilizes the eScooter domain, making the mode one that is set to replace 4 wheelers and gas emitting two wheelers.
David, the project’s parent, came to us with an idea to change how leisurely we leave our carbon footprint when we commute. He was looking for a way to alter the commutation medium that people, especially the flourishing millennial base chooses to travel even the shortest of the distance.
Taking inspiration from brands that succeeded in the micro-mobility movement, Bird and Lime, in particular, he too wanted to enter the space and do his part for the environment.
The app idea was conceived to give the app users a list-mile ride option - eScooters. The conceptualization was that the users should ditch riding from cars and motorbikes and swap the commutation with electric scooters. The anticipated effect of this move was two-fold: A. The cost incurred per ride would lower to a huge extent and B. The pollution emission would also get cut down.
The solution would entail connecting the eScooter with an application on the smartphone, which would be used to unlock the device and pay for the ride.
The project was shepherded with the vision to primarily cut down pollution and in effect, improve the state of living and the state of road movements that cripples the metropolitan areas.
The process of converting the concept into a full-fledged application that would go onto change the commutation industry required an in-depth understanding of the users who would grow into patrons.
We sat with David’s project team to get an understanding of the user demographics they wanted to address and revolutionize. The persona that we generated following the discussion went on to define our entire design and development process.
Location - UK
Age - 18 to 34 years
Income Level - Low to Mid-Income
Pain Point - Expensive Short-Mile Commutation
The project demanded us to be involved on all fronts. We had to cover the complete ground, from ideation to maintenance, with the clear intent to deliver a robust product within the clients’ time and budget requirements.
UI & UX Design - The flow, experiences, and moments were drawn out to create a mind map for developers and testers.
Frontend & Backend Development - The frontend and backend team came on the forefront to transform experiences into quick in and out actions. We had to prepare the app to perform several live actions like Power On/Off, Slowing of speed, etc depending on the real-time scenarios of how the scooter was being operated. We also had to create a ticket management system in the backend for riders to fill in details related to the issues they were facing, if any.
Testing - The QA team was involved to ensure that the application was robust and the inter-device linking was synchronous and unhackable.
Developing IoT applications always come with their set of complexities. The project required us to connect a mobile application with a barcoded eScooter. Establishing a seamless connection between the app and the eScooter in a way that the scooter would become app driven, is something that we initially struggled with. Our tech team, upon extensive research and brainstorming, found the solution to this issue in the lines and codes of networking modules.
Every technical element of the application, straight from the barcode reader to the unlocking of the eScooter, required a technology set that would make the experience unobtrusive and glitch-free. So, we hand-picked some of the best technologies to support the architecture of the application.
